SHOCKING news on a Thursday afternoon. I was just searching for a sports #tbt of a week where I checked twitter and saw the awful news that Prince has died a the age of 57.
A true legend musically, a fantastic guitarist. Was a little before my generations time, most people my age remember the Chappelle Show skit. I remember just seeing him on New Girl a couple years ago. Really sad stuff 57 is pretty young, my dad is 55. RIP Prince.
Game, Blouses.
P.S. Probably too soon but this made me laugh
Double P.S. According to Chris Rock Minnesota has no more black people. RIP!

Well as it both Thursday and ladies week at DOL for song of the day I figured I'd do a throwback song. So many great options. As I'm writing this I'm still thinking what song should get the honor. I wanna do Lovefool by the Cardigans. Almost did some No Doubt but Gwen Stefani has had a great, long career. She doesn't need me. She's doing fine. The Cardigans on the other hand are a one hit wonder, they need all the love they can get. What ever happened to those guys? I'm a big music history weirdo and one hit wonders fastanate me so much. To me at the top of the mountain for a brief moment in time, just go back to nothing it blows my mind and ironically a lot of the times one hit wonders are songs that have huge lasting legacies. But that's for another day. Here is the song of the day "Lovefool" by the Cardigans off their 1996 album First Band on the Moon. If you say you don't like this song you're just lying to yourself. Catchy AF. Now it's gonna be in your head all day. One of my all time favorite Office scenes.
When the Red Sox traded Jon Lester to the A's in 2014 they got OF Yoenis Cespedes in return. After the 2014 season ended the Red Sox traded him to the Tigers for Pitcher Rick Porcello. So effectively the Red Sox traded Jon Lester, World Series hero and borderline ace for Rick Porcello, who at his best is a #3 starter.
What really made Red Sox fans scratch their heads is when the Red Sox signed him to a 4 year 82.5 million dollar deal before throwing a single pitch for the Red Sox. He followed that up by going 9-15 with a 4.92 ERA and 1.36 WHIP in 2015. To say he didn't earn his contract would be an understatement.
2015 Rick Porcello was circling the mound after homers a lot. 25 times to be precise His Canada Day start against the Blue Jays stands out in particular where he gave up 7 runs in 2 innings thanks to 3 long balls.
The 2016 version of the Red Sox biggest concern is starting pitching, with Joe Kelly and E-Rod hurt they are already short arms. They have the offense and bullpen to contend this season but for starters after David Price everybody thought going into the season thought the rest of the rotation was shaky to say the least. For this team to be successful, multiple guys after David Price have to pitch quality innings to keep this Red Sox team (who's strength is offense) in games. If you give up 3 or 4 runs this team is going to win a majority of the time. Not exactly the most groundbreaking take but it is true. Plus after the last two seasons it has been very rare for the Red Sox to have quality starting pitching. After giving up a few monster bombs in his first start this year to Jose Bautista, Porcello settled down and pitched 6 innings allowing 4 runs while striking out 7 Toronto Blue Jays. He followed that up by pitching (by his standards) a gem against the Blue Jays only allowing 2 hits and 3 runs over 6.1 innings, while racking up 8 K's. Tonight v the Rays he pitched shutout baseball for 5 innings before giving up 3 earned runs. His final line was 7 innings pitched, 3 ER and 9 K's. Not exactly Clayton Kershaw numbers but performances like this are really all the Red Sox are asking for out of Porcello. Just keep the game alive. With their offense if you can keep the other team under 4 runs, you're going to win most nights. While he has given up 5 home runs through his 3 starts and 19.1 innings pitched which is troubling, he has kept the damage to a minimum and kept the Sox in games. I know sabermetrics guys thinks wins are meaningless but Porcello is 3-0 to start 2016. Already has 1/3 of the wins he had last year and it's still April. Last year it felt like Porcello would give up 8 runs a start and the Sox would be dead in every game by the 3rd inning. He did pitch better towards the end of 2015, I will give him that. While I'm not expecting Rick Porcello to win 20 games and be a Cy Young contender, despite a small sample size I think you have to be encouraged with how he has pitched so far in 2016.
People say Boston fans are tough on players and can be ass holes, which we most certain are. But I've said it a million times we are also very forgiving. If you turn it around you and put in max effort you will get love and support from the fans. John Lackey is the poster child for that sentiment. Hopefully pretty Ricky Porcello can be next.
Three years ago today, April 20th 2013 was one of the most special regular season Red Sox games I can ever remember. It was their first home game after the bombings, the city had been in lockdown the day before, the whole region was shaken.
The Red Sox came out in home jerseys that said "Boston" instead of Red Sox and David Ortiz gave the Famous "This is our fucking city" speech. It was such a powerful moment. I know I talk about this all the time but it is honestly, to me, one of the most important days and games in Red Sox history.
As for the game itself, the Sox were losing 2-1 in the 8th when Daniel Nava hit a 3 run homer to give the Sox a 4-1 lead. They'd end up winning the game 4-2. That homer gave the Red Sox a big win on a very emotional day at Fenway Park, but it was the call by the great Don Orsillo (that still gives me goosebumps) truly special. It's moments like his homer the first home game after the bombings that make sports special and meaningful. The escape that game gave the city for a few hours can not be understated.
I love Daniel Nava. I don't think I've ever been more infatuated with a random Red Sox player in my many years as I fan as I have been with him. He wasn't a superstar, in fact he was sort of just a role guy but I fell in love with him as a player.
I remember in 2010 the day after I graduated high school he made his major league debut for the Red Sox and hit a grand slam on the first pitch he ever saw as a major leaguer. Nava's story is amazing, won't go that deep into it, check it out if you have a chance, but basically he beat all the odds possible to make the majors. He was an absolute stud in 2013 hit .303 with .385 OBP both good for top 10 in the AL. Should have been all-star. Especially when you look at his first half splits. Not bad for a guy who had been designated for assignment in 2011.
John Farrell being the fucking awful manager he is didn't play him enough in the postseason and it nearly cost the Red Sox. Took a guy out of the line up who hit ,303 for a bum like Jonny Gomes and their offense went to shit, weird how that works. People forget that in their game one loss of the ALCS when they almost got no hit, it was Nava who broke up the no-no with a pinch hit single in the bottom of the 9th. Luckily the Red Sox still won the World Series but Nava still was way under appreciated for what he did in 2013. It was unsung players like him who stepped up big time for the Sox in the regular season to get them in that spot. When the Red Sox finally cut ties with him in 2015, it hurt me deeply but I understood it had to be done. Now he's currently on the DL with the Angels but hitting .286 in the limited time he's played this season, no matter the uniform, I'll always love Daniel Nava. His Home Run against the Royals on April 20th 2013 is one of my favorite moments in Red Sox history and I'll never forget it or him.
Day 3 of Ladies Week at DozOnLife and for today's song of the day it's a little bit of a throwback. Going way, way back in the time machine all the way to 2013 with CHVRCHES and The Mother We Share. This is one of my five favorite songs from 2013, I remember the first time I heard this driving on BRU and was hooked. The beat is awesome. CHVRCHES is an electronic, snythy band from Scotland and they're amazing. Last year their song "Leave a Trace" was on alt radio a lot as well. Even made my top of 2015 list.
(If you wanna check it out heres a tweet to the playlist)
Highly recommend giving CHVRCHES a listen, because like I've said before many times, my tastes are great, I won't steer you wrong.
Without further ado here is the song of the day for April 20th "The Mother We Share" by CHVRCHES off of their 2013 album "The Bones of What You Believe".
If you saw the Tom Brady "assemble" videos on Facebook a couple weeks ago then you probably saw Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola dressed up like cops in the video. When I saw that I was confused AF, no idea why they were running around in cop uniforms, maybe some weird role play stuff, but apparently it was for Edelman's latest youtube video:
DA and Jules team up as BPD officers "Chip" and "Dale".
I mean, I may be biased but I actually thought it was pretty funny. We got a 5 11, probably a 7 geeked me out. Edelman has been posting videos on youtube for a couple years. Some are good, a couple aren't that funny but this I have to say was well done. Together they make the hottest cops since Arrested Development
After a slow start to his Patriot career Danny Amendola really has shown the talent and skill everybody expected when the Pats signed him to replace Wes Welker. He was HUGE in the 2014-15 postseason, and really had his best year with the Pats in 2015. Little did we know it'd be Edelman who would step up and blossom into a star. Both are great, probably most handsome WR combo in NFL history. Now we know they have great chemistry both on and off the field.
P.S. The Patriots can't cut Amendola now right? Already got rid of Gronk's best friend (Chandler Jones) can't do it to Edelman too, can they? I know the cap is in shambles but Brady needs all the help he can get.
Via Dailymail http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3546526/Tinder-offers-scholarship-paid-internship-college-student-kicked-sorority-posting-risque-photo-dating-app.html
I meant to blog this when it came out but things came up. Basically this girl Shannon got kicked out of her sorority last week because she broke some rule by using this picture on tinder and her former sorority called this picture risqué and inappropriate.
Yes this picture. I don't know what I'm missing and apparently neither does most of the internet. In the eyes of the Nebraska-Omaha division of Chi Omega this picture is distasteful, and inappropriate. If that is distasteful or inappropriate to you then just stop reading now.
This is just like in Forest Gump when Jenny posed for Playboy in her college sweater and got kicked out of school. Except Jennnnnaaaaaaay was in fucking playboy in the early/mid 1960's and this was a harmless picture that didn't even have cleavage, or an ass shot.
I feel bad for this girl and all girls in this case. I'm no bleeding heart liberal feminist, but I can empathize for women because they are unfairly judged and overly sexualized even when they aren't doing anything sexual. Like how most high schools won't let girls have their shoulders exposed. Nothing hot about a fucking shoulder. This poor girl is just smiling looking cute AF (I'd 1000% swipe right and not get matched with her on tinder) with two friends posing for their "bid day". A wicked normal, non risqué picture you'd see on IG or FB but you'd think it was 2 girls 1 cup by the way the Sorority reacted.
With all the ridiculous stories I've read of people getting in trouble for the most insignificant things like this you'd think it was out of touch school administers who made the call but shockingly, this wasn't a school decision, it was the sorority. I'm actually embarrassed for this sorority based on their stupidity. They're acting like this girl posted a naked photo online. They're acting like better than tinder when I bet 80% of all girls in sororities nationwide use tinder. I wouldn't even be surprised if the girl disciplining her in the video is on tinder. It's 2016, if you're under 30, single and not on tinder you're behind the 8 ball. This sorority actually thought it was a good idea to make a big deal out of this. Like some higher ups sat down, talked and thought, yep this is offense worth kicking someone out for. That blows my mind. Man people are awful sometimes. I bet I could go on tinder for like 2 minutes and see 25 girls who have a similar picture on their profile and nobody would think twice. Honestly how stupid can you be, Chi Omega? I hope there is a backlash against you're shitty institution for this, I have no idea who their biggest rival is but I hope all the members of your sorority join it. For real, how can you not know the internet backlash you're gonna get? It's 2016. You have ME supporting a sorority chick and I haaaated Greek Life during my college days. (Jeez I sounded old saying that, I'm not even a year out of school) This whole story is insanity. I'm guessing a lot worse things have gone down in this girl's sorority, but this is what gets her kicked out? Technically she quit but she was getting kicked out, it's just like when you break up with someone just because you know they're about to break up with you, save a little face. That's what Shannon did here. Greek life is just a way to pay to drastically increase your chances of making "friends, get hammered and hook up every weekend. Let's not act like the 840 dollars some frat/sorority raises from a bake sale or carwash for "charity" actually does anything. All the "charity" they do is just to have some sort of reason for these institutions to still exist. If you take away the couple charity events a year most sororities and frats do what is there purpose? To make some friends, drink and hook up. I mean I'm not a greek life guy but I get it, all those things are awesome, that's what college life is all about, that I don't mind (it's the people themselves, but that's for another day) But lets call a spade a spade shall we? What I love about this that now Tinder has offered her a scholarship and paid internship because of this whole ridiculous ordeal. Who would have thought the most shallow app on the internet, that's whole platform is "You look at picture for a split second, then decide whether or not you'd give that person the time of day" would be the one with the right morals? They stepped up to the plate. Tinder is helping this girl out because she did nothing wrong by having this be photo as one of the her pics on their app. Side note.....I don't understand what actually goes at tinder HQ, I know nothing about technology but I feel like their whole company could be run out of a basement. It's just an algorithm that uses your GPS location to match you with people with X miles of you, but good for them for helping this girl out. I bet she majored in marketing like every other chick in college and can do some sort of advertising for them. So I guess this is a happy ending for Shannon, yeah she got kicked out of the sorority she was in for three years, but a free year of college and job opportunity sure can help make up for that. Day 2 of 5 of Girl Power Week on DOL. Five straight days of bands led by a strong female lead on vocals. If you're not with it, then don't let the door hit you on the way out. For April 19th, 2016 I'm going with some Florence + the Machine. F+M is probably my favorite band with a female lead singer. They're one of my favorite bands in music right now regardless of singer. It's The Black Keys, Mumford and Sons then I think Florence + the Machine. Lot of crap out right now that gets radio play but I stay away and enjoy actual music. You can listen to some rapper gargle, I'll take people with actual talent. I am supposed to see Florence in Mansfield this summer and I cannot wait. I've heard they do a great live show, and I'm sure the crowd in the lawn won't disappoint. Who knows, I'll be down close to 100 by then, maybe I'll meet the future Mrs Dozo. A blogger can dream. Honestly though, Florence Welch has one of the best voices in all of music, I feel like she is wicked underrated because they aren't really on traditional pop radio, but she has some fucking PIPES. It's going to be so awesome to hear her perform in person. The fact that only one song by them (Dog Days) had reached the Top 40 in the US is a joke. Just shows how big of a joke the charts can be. I love so many songs by this group but went with their current single "Delilah" off of their album "How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful" as the song of the day for April 19th. One of the best songs of the album, just some free advertising, NBD, I don't mind. But because it's a special week with a theme on DozOnLife AND because I love Florence + the Machine so much AND because it's Tuesday (double shot Tuesday S/O HJY even though I never listen to it) I'm gonna do a special double shot with a second Florence + the Machine song. My personal all time favorite, "No Light, No Light". "You can't chose what stays and what fades away" is one of the my all time favorite lyrics. I can't say enough good things about Florence Welch and her voice. Top personal 10 F + M songs:
10. Kiss With a Fist 9. Girl With One Eye 8. Breaking Down 7. How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful 6. Delilah 5. Ship to Wreck 4. You've Got the Love 3. Shake it Out 2. Dog Days Are Over 1. No Light, No Light Song of the Day for April 18th is "Gold Guns Girls" comes off their album Fantasies. Today's song of the say is like 6 years old but because I listen to music that must of my friends do not I doubt you've ever heard it. If you have, thats awesome, enjoy older alt rock jam. Couldn't think of a song for today so I did the old scroll through my phone's music (which I've done for like 75% of the SOTDS) to get some inspiration.
Metric is really good, I love bands with female singers. Little dozo tidbit for you on a Monday afternoon...Just inspired myself to do bands with female singers all week...and people will call me a sexist? Smh. Little background Metric comes from our neighbors to the north, Canada. I'm guessing that somehow inspired the name Metric. Whatever I'm getting off track and Clay Buchholz is about to implode for the Sox I gotta go. Listen to this and check out more Metric when you get a chance. Hey guys- I appreciate everybody following what I've written so far, I'm just making a minor update to the format of the website. Originally I wanted to have all posts on the home page and then also organized by category (eg. sports, music) but for some reason they'd just show up in their respective category tab and not on the homepage so unless you searched or click on a link from my Facebook or twitter you'd miss it.
In order to make Dozonlife more user friendly I'm just gonna post every blog on the homepage. Not exactly how I wanted it but now you can just go to dozonlife.com and see all the newest posts on the homepage. It probably makes more sense, all my older posts are still gonna be on the site in their old categories. If I can ever find a way to have both I will. Thanks for reading and I'm gonna keep writing! -Doz |
